How many of you have a special affinity for your sport fishing tackle?  Did it start as a child when you would look into your tackle box and feel like you needed to fill up every slot with a lure to be satisfied? Did you spend more time looking at all the lures at the sporting goods store than you did candy at the grocery store?  And you just couldn’t wait to get to the lake or stream where you could try out your latest lures, right?

Of course, without sport fishing tackle there would be no sport fishing.  While the whole tackle thing can get a bit out of hand, it’s clear that some lures work better under certain situations than do others.  And knowing what kinds of conditions call for particular lures and tackle is invaluable.  Choosing the right tackle is an art, and as you get more experienced with various fish and fishing conditions you will learn which tackle is most likely to bring success.  Of course, your fishing friends will have no shortage of advice.

It doesn’t matter if it’s fishing reels, fishing line, or fishing lures – or whether the topic is fly fishing or fly-tying gear – you will find no shortage of stores to meet your needs – and overwhelm you with choices.  If you find yourself looking into your wallet or checking your credit card balance to see if you can afford just one more piece of sport fishing tackle, it’s a good change you are an addict.  Relax.  You’re in great company!

Fun in Choosing Sport Fishing Tackle

Feb 8 2010 / 5:52 pm Was written by admin No Comments Yet

Fishing is almost like meditation with the sport fishing tackle as your meditation beads. You stand on the bank or sit in your boat with the sun warming your back, the sound of flowing water soothing your tired soul and Mother Nature sharing her bounties with you. Now, that is definitely meditation with a purpose.

Anyway, choosing your fishing tackle is a fun activity. You can browse through the numerous selections of hooks, lines, sinkers, rods, reels, floats, baits, lures, nets, waders and tackle boxes. For avid recreational fishermen, it is like being in a toy store!

The need to choose the right sport fishing tackle cannot be overemphasized. Your success in finally catching the one-that-got-away the first time often depends on it. Fortunately, there are fun tips to selecting the tackle that will work for whatever sort of fishing is in your plans.

  • Determine the area where you will be fishing and what you’ll be fishing for. Understand the seasons and other regulations. And get the right licenses.
  • Decide on the fish species you are going to pursue. For example, freshwater fishes like redfish and salmon often require a different set of fishing tackle than those required for salt water game fish like marlin and mackerel.
  • Look into your personal strategies when fishing. You may either fall into the traditional fly fishing or the high-tech fishing categories.
  • Assess your budget. You get what you pay for although the techniques used will also have a bearing on how well the sport fishing tackle performs in the field. Don’t hesitate to take some classes if you need to improve your technique!

You may also need to look into your fishing techniques. You will need practice to perfect your technique but it will be fun. So, enjoy the time spent in fishing the waters. And don’t hesitate to take some classes if you need to improve your technique!

For beginners, get the right tackle for the specific fishing you will do, and don’t try to outfit yourself for every species you might ever want to pursue. You can always add to your collection of tackle as you gain experience in fishing.

Types of Sport Fishing Tackle

Feb 1 2010 / 8:45 am Was written by admin No Comments Yet

For many beginners in recreational fishing, the term sport fishing tackle refers to the hook, line and sinker only. In reality, it refers to many types of equipment used in sport fishing, be it in freshwater or in saltwater.

Apart from the fishing pole, hooks are very important. Most hooks are pretty standard, although they do come in a variety of sizes. Since hooks are very cheap, you can stock up on them depending on the types of fishes you want to catch.

Rigs come in two types – the bobber and the crappie. If you are a beginner, we suggest going for the bobber rigs especially when fishing for bluegills.

And then there are the bobbers and the sinkers. You will know when a fish has bitten your bait by the way that the bobbers behave while the sinkers drop the bait to the bottom where the fishes are located. As such, when you purchase sport fishing tackle equipment, these two are always companions.

You will also need swivels especially when using a spinner or a minnow as bait. Your line will twist and turn, which the right kind of swivel can prevent. Needless to say, you should choose the swivel that fit your hooks and baits.

Other fishing equipment includes baits and tackle boxes. The bait lure in the fish while the tackle boxes keep your sport fishing tackle equipment organized.

However, you must remember that having the right fishing equipment is only the beginning. You must possess the right kind of fishing technique for the waters where you will be catching your dream fishes.

It is also very important to follow the laws on fishing in a particular area. If necessary, you should secure the permit to fish. You should also maintain cordial relations with your fellow fishermen especially with the locals. After all, this is one of the joys of recreational fishing — you can socialize with others of similar interests and yet have time to be alone with nature.
